Located in the leafy district of Twickenham in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, Twickenham station is 11 miles (18.1 km) away from its terminus, London Waterloo. The station is at the centre of a long stretch of two tracks between Putney and Egham that are level with the surrounding land, except for the Richmond Railway Bridge.

Twickenham’s first station was on the west side of London Road, opening in 1848. The Second World War stalled work to construct the current Gothic-style station on the other side of the London Road bridge.
