Sheffield Train Station
Tucked away on the edge of the idyllic Peak District, Sheffield’s train station dates back to 1870 when the words ‘Sheffield Steel’ were world-famous and synonymous with the city’s first-class steel and tableware industries.
Nowadays, the city is known as the ‘Greenest City in the UK’ for its abundance of parks and green spaces and the ratio of trees to people—a very far cry from its industrial heyday. It also has some world-class educational institutions, like Sheffield Hallam University, which is actually reasonably close to Sheffield Train Station. The station is the busiest station in South Yorkshire and the second busiest in Yorkshire & Humberside after Leeds.
The station has changed and expanded considerably since 1870, but vestiges of its heritage still exist, especially between platforms two and five. A tasteful Edwardian stone frontage was added to the station in 1905 and remains perfectly intact.
Sheffield Train Station also boasts many amenities, including:
- A ticket office at the station concourse (opening times: Monday to Saturday: 5.00am – 10.30pm; Sunday: 7.45am – 11.00pm). You can book train tickets as well as monthly and annual season ticketsat the ticket office.
- Self-service ticket machines and accessible ticket machines. Plus, you can collect tickets you have bought online from the self-service machines.
- Step-free access to all platforms.
- Boards to check the real-time train timetable.
- ATMs, shops, and hospitality.
- Public telephones.
- 400 bicycle compounds and stands. There is a cycle hub at the station’s entrance next to the taxi rank, and an additional stand is on platform 6.
