Take a trip on the Salisbury to London Waterloo train and reach the capital in 1 hour 20 minutes with South Western Railway. On the way there, you'll pass quickly into the beautiful Hampshire countryside, passing towns such as Andover and Basingstoke. Look out for flights taking off from Farnborough Airport! From there, you'll skirt into pretty Surrey before crossing the M25 and entering Greater London.

South Western Railway has its terminus at Waterloo and, as you might realise from their name, operates services that generally run into the South West of London and England, providing suburban commuter trains as well as longer distance intercity travel. They go to places like Dorking, Guildford, Reading, Windsor, Woking, Poole, Portsmouth, Exeter and Bournemouth.

Departing from Salisbury

The fast train from Salisbury to London Waterloo departs from Salisbury Railway Station. This is located on Churchfields Road, from which there is pedestrian access. If you're arriving by car, though, you need to reach the station via the roundabout on Mill Road. There are also a number of bus stops immediately east of the station entrance, with buses travelling across the local area, including to the nearby Stonehenge Visitor Centre.

Salisbury Station is on the West of England Line. Trains travel from here to Exeter St Davids and Romsey via Southampton Central on South Western Railway. Great Western Railway runs trains to Portsmouth Harbour, Cardiff Central and Bristol Temple Meads.

Faster services normally visit Andover, Basingstoke, Woking and Clapham Junction on their way to London Waterloo.

Slower stopping services generally call at Grateley, Andover, Whitchurch (Hants), Overton, Basingstoke, Woking. Some services also call at Clapham Junction in addition.

Arriving at London Waterloo

The best Salisbury to London Waterloo train will deliver you quickly to London Waterloo Station. Located just south of the River Thames in Central London, it's the busiest railway station in the country. Buses from across the city stop on the roads around the station, plus it has its own London Underground station. You can catch Tube trains on the Bakerloo, Northern, Jubilee and Waterloo & City lines.

South Western Trains operate services from London Waterloo, calling at stations to the south west of London and into Surrey, as well as the South and South West coasts, with destinations including those mentioned above.

There are so many things to do in London. Since Waterloo is located so close to the Thames, you could do worse than have a stroll along the river. Wander east of the station and you'll be met with a delightful curated green space in the shadow of the enormous London Eye, which is worth a visit. Across the river lies the Palace of Westminster - the seat of power for the whole country - and the iconic Big Ben. You can even take a sightseeing bus along the river from here.

• Standard Class: Standard Class is the best option for those looking to get a comfortable journey at a great price. Over half of South Western Railway's trains now offer on-board Wi-Fi. If your train has it, there will be stickers to inform you. Plus, you can sit in a Quiet Zone if you prefer a more relaxed experience.
• First Class: You can also travel from Salisbury to London Waterloo First Class. You get an upgrade to better seating with more legroom. There's a table at each seat, so you can catch up on work or eat a sandwich. You also get at-seat wireless charging for mobile devices.

• Luggage: Overhead shelves are available for smaller items (like airline carry-on luggage), while bigger cases and bags can be stowed in the main luggage racks.

• Children: Children under 5 travel for free (but may need to sit on your lap). Those between 5 and 15 will get tickets at half price. Buggies should be folded and stowed as luggage if possible. You can use a wheelchair space for your buggy unless a wheelchair or scooter user needs to occupy it.
• Pets: Up to two dogs or other pets can be brought with you on a journey. Dogs must be on a lead and other pets need to be in a carrier.
